The Affordable Sustainability for Logistics Networks in Ghana (ASONG) Project has officially ended after three years of innovation in training, industry engagement, and sustainability-driven research.
The project was implemented under the Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition” and jointly carried out by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) School of Business (KSB) and Technische Universität Berlin. It was funded by the German Government through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Professor Henry Kofi Mensah, Principal Investigator for the ASONG Project, explained that the initiative was designed to address skills gaps in the logistics sector, especially in sustainability, data analytics, and practical industry competencies. He said that through research, hands-on training, and international collaboration, the programme sought to align academic training with real industry needs.
According to Dr. Mahdi Alazzeh, the project delivered short-course programmes, industry workshops, internships, and research support.
“Participants benefited from courses in Sustainable Logistics, Data Analytics, and Business Networks in Africa. A total of three cohorts were trained, with each cohort limited to 20 participants to ensure practical engagement and mentorship,” he revealed
He further noted that industry partnerships were crucial as they facilitated over 100 internship placements, including international exchanges. Five Ghanaian students secured internships in Germany, while five German students were hosted in Ghana
The Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, commended the team for their dedication and encouraged beneficiaries to use their newly acquired training to benefit society.
The beneficiaries of the programme expressed their appreciation to the organisers for the opportunity and for supporting their growth. They highlighted how their participation enhanced both their technical and personal development, providing them with practical skills, industry exposure, and valuable professional experience.
As part of the ceremony, certificates were awarded to all trainees who completed the workshops and internships, recognising their achievements and newly acquired skills.
